REVIEW / SHAUN DE WAAL
Damn! I just missed this concert in London last year, and it’s a great one. It’s also likely to be among Cohen’s last, given that he’s now 73. Then again, he’s a very sprightly 73 — on this concert DVD, he jogs on and off stage and, now and then, drops to his knees without any sign of creakiness or discomfort. He’s obviously very happy to be performing, thanking the audience repeatedly, and the audience is obviously very happy to see him. He smiles and jokes often. Wearing a suit and a nice hat he doffs a few times, he and his band move through a range of his famous songs, from oldies such as Suzanne and Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye to more recent numbers. The latter come off somewhat better in this concert, written as they are for the sepulchral “golden voice” that is now Cohen’s, and with a richer orchestration for the band and (three) backing singers. He used to do it all with one acoustic guitar; now the instrumentation includes such rarities as an electronic clarinet (I think it is), a banderia and an archilaud (the two lastnamed are stringed instruments, by the way). There are no visual pyrotechnics on stage or in the filming; this is just Cohen straight up, and it’s wonderful.
