The new version of Brideshead Revisited looks wonderful and boasts a superb, heartbreaking performance from Ben Whishaw as the dissolute Sebastian Flyte. But it can’t solve the novel’s central problem of what now seems a bizarre faith in the Catholic church, not to mention a cold-fish cipher of a heroine.
