I’m no Trekkie, so I can’t comment on how the Star Trek “reboot” tallies with its illustrious television forebear. What I can say is that it is fun, with a generally youthful air about it, and lots of rushing about the cosmos in the interests of saving the universe and so forth. Basically, it’s an origin story that gives us some background on how James T Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) got into this intergalactic-exploration business, though much more of the former than the latter (discrimination against Vulcans?). Pine is pulchritudinous and gives Kirk more life and lustiness than you’d expect from the William Shatner incarnation, while Quinto does Spock’s cool rationality with aplomb. You can even directly compare Quinto’s Spock with Leonard Nimoy’s, as allowed by time-travel. (An apparently miffed Shatner declined a cameo.) As pointed out by a beardy colleague of mine, the storyline has a plot hole bigger than the black holes the characters use to jump through time, but never mind: the ever-moving camera and the spectacular effects will keep you distracted from too much contemplation of such things, and the storyline moves along with dispatch.
