Crank: High Voltage

REVIEW / SHAUN DE WAAL
The first Crank had one of the most boggling sex scenes in cinema history; the second Crank can’t quite top it, but it goes all-out for the rest of the film. Get this: thug Chelios (Jason Statham) has had his heart stolen by some yakuza types, but he escapes from the operating table. He’s been fitted with a plastic heart that needs regular jolts of electricity if he is to survive long enough to get his real heart back and take his revenge. Much absurdly enjoyable action follows at great speed, with regular shocks. The composite entity that directed the film, Neveldine/Taylor, has clearly seen the work of maverick Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, but they don’t risk his outright perversity. Pity. Still, Crank: High Voltage is ridiculous, brain-slamming fun.
