REVIEW / ILHAM RAWOOT
Working together for the first time since Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mama Tambien, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna play brothers from a small Mexican village in this bittersweet take on the rags-to-riches progress of smalltimers making it in the big city. In this film, directed by Alfonso’s brother, Carlos Cuarón, the brothers are plucked from their lives on a banana plantation by a seedy talent scout who takes them to Mexico City, where they enter the world of professional football. The plot follows a downward spiral of desperate attempts, all in vain, which are symbolic of the way in which classism breeds classism, and the vicious cycle of the poor and marginalised being forced to stay put.
