REVIEW / FARANAAZ PARKER
Pixar’s latest animated feature is a reflection on the beauty of sustaining a lifelong dream and the dangers of holding on too tightly to dreams that can’t be attained. With development taking over his neighbourhood, Carl Fredericksen hooks hundreds of helium balloons up to his house, intent on floating away to idyllic Paradise Falls. What he doesn’t count on is a shipmate — or is it housemate? Russell, a scout trying to earn a badge for assisting the elderly, is caught up in Carl’s quest after pursuing a bird under the house. What follows is essentially a buddy movie. For all the surreal imagery in the film, the sweeping sunsets, wispy clouds and impossibly shiny balloons (made all the more realistic by “Real 3D”), the gem in this film is its realistic characterisation of old men and little boys.
