REVIEW / SHAIN GERMAINER
Moon
Sam Rockwell stars as the sole astronaut in charge of a mining operation on the moon whose sense of reality begins to warp after an accident involving head trauma. It’s a plot line that looks to be full of twists, but those looking for cinematic mind games will be disappointed to find out that Moon is rather straightforward. Still, this doesn’t make the film any less compelling. Isolation and paranoia are omnipresent, but the black humour and likeable main character help to lighten the dread. Rockwell gives a charismatic, strong performance. The special effects are rather cheap, but they have a charm and beauty that should allow suspension of disbelief. Moon is proof that quality science fiction can exist without huge casts, big budgets and overly complicated storylines.
